What is Teeth Whitening?

Your path to a radiant smile

Professional teeth whitening — safe and effective

Professional whitening gently and precisely removes discolouration from the tooth enamel using a special whitening gel. The result: naturally white teeth that complement your smile.

Unlike over-the-counter products, we use higher concentrations of active ingredients under dental supervision — this means: better results, fewer side effects and a lasting outcome.

Why do teeth become darker?

Dietary habits: Coffee, tea, red wine and cigarettes deposit colour pigments.

Age: Over time, the enamel becomes thinner and the yellowish dentin shows through.

Medication: Certain antibiotics (e.g. tetracycline) can cause discolouration.

Genetics: Natural tooth colour varies from person to person.

Who is whitening suitable for?

Whitening is suitable for adults with healthy teeth and gums. Before whitening, we always carry out a thorough examination and recommend a professional dental cleaning.

Important: Crowns, fillings and veneers are not affected by whitening. If necessary, these can be colour-matched after the treatment.

Good to know: Professional whitening is well-researched and considered safe. When applied correctly, tooth enamel is not damaged.

Which method is right for me?

We make the decision together. In a personal consultation, we analyse your current tooth colour, discuss your wishes and recommend the optimal method. Both procedures are safe and effective — the difference lies in comfort and speed.

How whitening works

The active ingredient (hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide) penetrates the enamel and breaks down the colour molecules. Simply put: the discolouration is "dissolved" — the tooth itself remains intact. The process is comparable to removing a stain from a white shirt — just much gentler.

How the treatment works

Step by step to white teeth

In-Office Whitening — Procedure
1
Consultation & shade assessment
We determine your current tooth shade and discuss the desired result.
2
Professional dental cleaning
If not already done, we recommend a professional cleaning before whitening for optimal results.
3
Gum protection
We apply a protective barrier (gingival protector) so that the gel only affects the teeth.
4
Gel application & processing time
The highly concentrated whitening gel is applied to the teeth. Depending on the system, 2–3 rounds of 15–20 minutes each.
5
Result & fluoride treatment
We compare the result with the original shade. Finally, a fluoride gel is applied to strengthen the enamel.
Home Whitening — Procedure
1
Consultation & impressions
We take impressions for your custom whitening trays.
2
Tray fitting
Within a few days you receive your custom-made trays — perfect fit guaranteed.
3
Application at home
You fill a small amount of gel into the tray and wear it daily for 30–60 minutes. We show you exactly how it works.
4
Check-up at the practice
After 1–2 weeks we check the result and adjust the treatment if necessary.
Good to know: With in-office whitening, you can see the result immediately. With home whitening, the result becomes visible gradually over several days.
Aftercare

How to keep your smile radiant

The first 48 hours — "White Diet"

In the first two days after whitening, your teeth are particularly susceptible to staining.

Please avoid

Coffee, tea, red wine, cola

Curry, tomato sauce, berries

Smoking

Coloured mouthwash

Long-term care tips

Regular professional cleaning (every 6 months)

Electric toothbrush, soft bristles

Fluoride toothpaste

After coffee/tea: rinse mouth with water

Do not smoke

Rule of thumb: Anything that would stain a white T-shirt should be avoided during these 48 hours.
How long does the result last?

Depending on lifestyle, the whitening result lasts 1–3 years. Those who avoid coffee and cigarettes enjoy the result longest. A touch-up whitening (especially with the home whitening trays) is easily possible at any time.

Tip: Temporary sensitivity after whitening is normal and subsides completely within 1–2 days. If needed, we recommend a sensitivity toothpaste.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your questions — our answers

Does whitening hurt?
No! Some patients experience slight sensitivity during or after treatment — this is normal and disappears within 1–2 days. We use desensitising gels to maximise comfort.
Does whitening damage my teeth?
When performed professionally: No. Studies confirm that tooth enamel is not damaged. It is important that the treatment takes place under dental supervision to ensure safe and effective results.
Will crowns and fillings also become lighter?
No, whitening only works on natural tooth substance. Crowns, fillings and veneers do not change colour. If necessary, we can colour-match these after whitening.
Can I whiten during pregnancy?
We recommend avoiding whitening during pregnancy and breastfeeding — not because it has been proven harmful, but as a precaution.
How white will my teeth become?
The result depends on the original colour and type of discolouration. Typically, 4–8 shades of lightening are possible. During the consultation, we show you using a shade guide what result is realistic.
In-office or home whitening — which is better?
Both methods deliver very good results. In-office whitening is faster (visible immediately), while home whitening is more flexible and somewhat gentler. We are happy to advise you on which method best suits your needs.
Can I refresh the result?
Yes! Especially with home whitening trays, a touch-up is easily possible at any time. We recommend a touch-up whitening every 6–12 months as needed.
