After tooth extraction

Important information for a quick and uncomplicated recovery.

Your aftercare at a glance

Aftercare step
The 3 most important rules
1. Bite firmly on the swab for at least 30 minutes!
The swab helps to stop the bleeding. Don't keep checking — just bite down and wait.
2. Do not rinse, suck, or spit today!
The blood clot (coagulum) in the wound is your best friend — it protects the wound. Do not rinse it out!
3. Cool, cool, cool!
Wrap an ice pack in a cloth and place it on the outside of your cheek. 20 min. cooling, 20 min. break.
Your healing roadmap
First 2 hours
Bite on swab. Do not eat or drink. Do not smoke. Start cooling.
Day 1 (today)
Soft, cool food (yoghurt, soup, ice cream). Do not rinse! No sports. Elevate upper body slightly when sleeping. For pain: Ibuprofen 400 mg (max. 3× daily).
Day 2–3
Carefully rinse with lukewarm sage tea or chlorhexidine mouthwash (not vigorously!). Swelling may increase — this is normal. Continue with soft food.
Day 4–7
Swelling subsides. Gradually return to normal diet. Wound heals from the edges. Stitches removed after approx. 7–10 days (if placed).
After 2–3 weeks
The wound is superficially closed. Complete bone healing takes approx. 3–6 months.

This helps healing

Cool (20 min. on, 20 min. off)

Soft, cool food

Drink plenty of water (not over the wound)

Elevate head when sleeping

Ibuprofen for pain (as directed)

Continue brushing carefully (avoid wound area)

From day 2: Carefully rinse with sage tea

Please avoid

Smoking (min. 48 hours, better 1 week!)

Alcohol (24 hours)

Hot drinks and food (day 1)

Dairy products directly on the wound

Vigorous rinsing or spitting (day 1)

Drinking with a straw (suction effect!)

Sports and heavy physical work (2–3 days)

Aspirin (promotes bleeding!)

Pain & medication

The anaesthesia will last for another 2–4 hours. Take your painkiller preferably before the anaesthesia wears off — this way you stay ahead of the pain.

Recommended: Ibuprofen 400 mg — as needed (max. 3× daily, with some food).

Alternative: Paracetamol 500 mg — bis zu 4x täglich.

No Aspirin (ASS)! Aspirin thins the blood and can increase bleeding.

If you have been prescribed an antibiotic, please take it exactly as directed and until the end of the pack.

Swelling — this is normal!

Swelling after tooth extraction is completely normal and no cause for concern. It usually peaks on day 2 or 3 and then gradually subsides.

Tip: Cooling helps best in the first 24 hours. After that, moist warmth (e.g. warm flannel) helps from day 3.

Mild bleeding

Mild bleeding or the taste of blood in saliva is normal in the first 24 hours.

What to do: Roll up a clean handkerchief or gauze compress firmly, place it on the wound and bite down for 30 minutes. Sit still, keep head elevated.

Important: If the bleeding does not stop after 1–2 hours despite biting down, please call us.

Eating & drinking — what's OK?

Suitable:

Soup (lukewarm, not hot!) · Ice cream (without pieces) · Yoghurt · Avocado · Banana · Scrambled eggs · Soft pasta · Mashed potatoes

Please avoid:

Hard food (nuts, crisps, crusts) · Spicy food · Very hot food · Crumbly food (rice, wholegrain bread)

Important: Chew on the other side if possible and only eat when the anaesthesia has completely worn off — risk of bite injury!
Smoking: Smoking is the most common cause of wound healing problems after tooth extraction! Nicotine constricts blood vessels and prevents good healing. Please do not smoke for at least 48 hours — ideally one week.

When should you call us immediately?

Heavy, unstoppable bleeding after 2+ hours
Increasing pain after 3–4 days (instead of improving)
Fever above 38.5°C
Severe swelling that increases after day 3
Numbness that does not subside after 24 hours

Oral hygiene after extraction

Day 1: Brush teeth carefully, but avoid the wound area. Do not rinse!

From day 2: Carefully rinse with sage tea or chlorhexidine mouthwash (e.g. Chlorhexamed). Not vigorously — simply fill the mouth, hold briefly, let it run out gently.

From day 3–4: Gradually resume normal brushing. Clean the wound area gently with a soft toothbrush.
